Why Velocity of Money is Overlooked

<< Back

Complexity of Understanding Velocity of Money:
The Velocity of Money is tracking how fast money moves around in the economy. It's important because it shows how active the economy is. But it's not easy to understand because it involves looking at a lot of economic data and doing complicated math. This can make it hard for people who aren't economists to get a handle on it.

No Direct Way to Influence it:
When policymakers want to change things in the economy, they usually have tools they can use, like adjusting interest rates or government spending. But there's
no specific tool they can use to directly change the Velocity of Money. Since it's indirectly influenced by other factors, it might not get as much attention in discussions about economic policies.

Data Challenges:
Getting the information needed to figure out the Velocity of Money can be tough. We don't have detailed data on every single transaction that happens in the economy. So, economists have to make estimates and use other methods to try to figure it out. This can sometimes make the results less accurate.

Focus on Other Numbers:
When people want to know how well the economy is doing, they often look at things like how much stuff we're making
(GDP), how prices are changing (inflation), and how many people are out of work (unemployment). These numbers are easier to understand and widely used. So, the Velocity of Money doesn't always get as much attention.

Long-Term Trends vs. Short-Term Changes:
The Velocity of Money doesn't usually change a lot from one day to the next. Instead, it tends to show gradual changes over time. So, people might not pay as much attention to it because it doesn't give quick updates on what's happening in the economy right now.

Focus on What We Can Control:
Governments and central banks often focus on things like setting interest rates and controlling how much money is floating around in the economy. These actions directly influence things like borrowing, spending, and inflation.

But the Velocity of Money isn't something we can directly control, so it sometimes gets overlooked in favour of things we can manage more directly.
